Saying Goodbye to Summer

Wow! What a change! It's like a switch was thrown and it went from hot steamy Summer to cool comfortable Autumn overnight! We still have about a week before Autumn is officially here. I wanted to share some photos I took in late August of my garden.

This first photo was taken during one of our hot steamy mornings.  The camera lens fogged over when the hot humid air hit it. I kind of liked the misty look so I kept it.

After my camera became acclimatized to the outdoor temperature, this is what it really looked like. Kind of an overcast, but very steamy hot day!

Yes, I love my phlox, they smell heavenly! And no, they are not all the same! They all have their own unique shade and markings!

Some are more pink and some more purple hued.

A Downy Woodpecker, left a lovely feather for me!

This phlox is quite confused. It has some pink flowers with white accents, some the reverse of that and some just mixed or white!

The white phlox has some wild orange jewel-weed behind it. Jewel-weed is a native plant that the hummingbirds love. It is also known to ease the symptoms of poison ivy exposure.

I will be posting a few more garden pictures with you as we say a long goodbye to Summer. Before I go I want to share with you a quote....

Part of the afternoon had waned, but much of it was left,
and what was left was of the finest and rarest quality. Real
dusk would not arrive for many hours; but the flood of
summer light had begun to ebb, the air had grown mellow,
the shadows were long upon the dense, smooth turf.

Henry James (1843-1916)
American-born English novelist

  3. What a nice post with gorgeous flowers. I love that feather that the Downy Woodpecker, left you. What a unique one that is. I've never seen one like it.

We have the same weather here. For a while it was steamy outside and all of a sudden WHAM it's quite cool. I imagine the leaves will start changing colours right about now. Can't wait for the autumn shades!

  8. The phlox are amazing -- mine were a bit on the wimpy side this year, so it's nice to see yours doing so well!

    1. Translation:
Summer is unfortunately ending, but autumn has its good sides.
The phlox like it very much, with its many colors.
      Best regards, Karin

The weather is turning here as well - summer if definitely over. I've also loved that quote - every now & then I read something that really resonates with me & this is one of those times - I'm going to have to remember which post of yours its on so I can come back to it again!

  13. Dear Diane - what a lovely post...your garden in August still looks so beautiful and fresh...mine gets terribly worn at this time of the year. I love your phlox - I have pink, white and a little lavender...they smell so good when it heats up. I know what you mean about summer and then suddenly fall...our 90 degree weather went from running the air conditioner and fan to on the week-end turning on some heat (LOL)! I loved both of your quotes for September and fall. Thank you so much for sharing your garden...I feel almost as if I was walking along side of you taking in the beauty of the last of summer. Have a great day.

  14. It feels more like winter in the UK today. It’s freezing in my office, and I’m back to my winter ‘uniform’ of layers over layers.
I love your autumnal ‘photos and the music that accompanies them.

  17. Dear Diane, your posts are my tranquil retreat, a place where I can be at peace for just a small amount of time and enjoy all that you have to offer. I've been off the blogging sphere for some time due to family concerns and now I've had to return to the workforce therefore I blog randomly. Spring is in the air here and whilst it's fast becoming my favourite season, at the moment we have had non-stop spring rain. I've been flat out rescuing spiders and flowers from the relentless attack of water but my how the birds are loving the offering. Blessings to you.
